Flood Alert Issued in Northern Odisha as River Levels Surge After Heavy Rain
Bhubaneswar: Continuous rainfall over the past several days has caused river levels in northern Odisha—especially in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore—to rise dangerously, prompting flood alerts and heightened emergency preparedness across vulnerable regions.
Major Rivers Cross or Near Danger Levels
According to a flood bulletin issued by the Water Resources Department at 1 PM on Saturday, multiple rivers including the Baitarani, Jalaka, and Subarnarekha are either flowing above or nearing their danger marks.
- Baitarani River: At Anandpur, water has surged to 38.82 meters, breaching the danger mark of 38.36 meters, with levels continuing to rise.
At Akhuapada, while currently at 17.98 meters, projections by the Central Water Commission (CWC) suggest a rise to 18.65 meters by 10 PM tonight—above the danger level of 18.33 meters. - Jalaka River: In Balasore district, the river is flowing at 7.20 meters at Mathani, well above the danger level of 6.50 meters, sparking concerns over flash flooding in surrounding low-lying areas.
- Subarnarekha River: At Jamsola Ghat, the river level has reached 47.92 meters, nearing the danger mark of 49.16 meters. At Rajghat, levels have climbed to 7.26 meters and are rapidly increasing. A peak flood level of 11.7 meters is forecasted by 10 AM on July 27.
Government Response in Full Swing
In anticipation of worsening conditions, the State Flood Control Room is operating 24/7, monitoring real-time river data and coordinating with district administrations.
Collectors of Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore have been put on high alert, with evacuation orders for flood-prone areas being prepped and relief measures activated.
To bolster on-ground response:
- Two senior engineers have been dispatched from Bhubaneswar to oversee Subarnarekha and Baitarani basin operations.
- Basin managers and chief engineers from all major river systems—Subarnarekha-Budhabalanga, Mahanadi-Brahmani-Baitarani—are working in close coordination with local authorities.
Public Advisory
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to stay alert, follow official instructions, and cooperate with emergency teams. With water levels expected to rise significantly in the next 24 hours, the next phase will be crucial in mitigating the impact of possible flooding.
