Fresh Rains Worsen Plight of Flood-Hit Villagers in Odisha’s Kendrapara

Published on

Kendrapara: Continuous rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday has worsened the living conditions of flood-affected residents in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, with many now struggling for dry shelter as water enters their makeshift tents.

The worst-hit regions include Aul, Pattamundai, and Rajkanika blocks, where thousands of villagers were already displaced by earlier flooding and had taken refuge on river embankments and highways.

Shelters Inundated Amid Fresh Rain

“We’ve been living in a tent on the river embankment since Monday after our village got submerged. But on Tuesday night, rainwater entered our shelter,” said Mahesh Behera of Taradipal in Pattamundai block.

Heavy showers since Tuesday evening have made things worse for displaced villagers who are now facing the fourth consecutive night under open skies or in flooded tents.

Villagers Need Polythene and Basic Aid

Sarpanch of Penthapala panchayat, Annapurna Sethi, stated that many mud-walled homes have collapsed, and people are in urgent need of polythene sheets to cover their temporary shelters.

Rabindra Mallick, Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Kendrapara, acknowledged the worsening crisis: “Most people staying on highways and embankments are now drenched. We are dispatching polythene sheets and essential relief quickly.”

Relief Operations and Challenges

District Emergency Officer, Amiya Ketan Swain, confirmed that while floodwaters are receding in some areas, incessant rains continue to hamper relief efforts. So far, 11 panchayats have been reported as severely affected, with road links cut off in many interior villages.

Block development officers and tehsildars have been directed to distribute food and polythene sheets without delay.

Kendrapara on Alert

With road connectivity lost, shelter compromised, and fresh rains adding to the destruction, Kendrapara’s rural population remains highly vulnerable. Relief teams are racing against time to provide aid, especially to women, children, and the elderly exposed to the elements.
