German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to arrive in India for a crucial two-day diplomatic engagement on January 12–13, marking his first official visit to the country. The Friedrich Merz India visit comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is expected to significantly boost bilateral cooperation between India and Germany across multiple high-impact sectors.

Friedrich Merz India visit begins with high-level talks in Gujarat

Prime Minister Modi will formally receive Chancellor Merz on January 12 in Ahmedabad, setting the stage for wide-ranging discussions at the leadership level. The timing of the visit is strategically aligned with Gujarat’s flagship investment initiatives, reinforcing India’s image as a global business and manufacturing hub. The engagement is expected to draw attention from international investors, multinational corporations, and policy stakeholders.

Investment, trade and technology in focus during Friedrich Merz India visit

A central theme of the visit will be the expansion of cooperation in trade, investment, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Both leaders are expected to review progress in the India–Germany Strategic Partnership, which completed 25 years last year, while outlining a future roadmap covering defence, security, green energy, climate finance, artificial intelligence, research, innovation, education, skilling, and workforce mobility sectors that attract high-value global investments and strong advertiser interest.

Vibrant Gujarat events add economic momentum

The visit coincides with Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Rajkot on January 11, an event aimed at attracting large-scale investments to the Saurashtra and Kutch regions. Gujarat will also host the globally renowned International Kite Festival, while the Ahmedabad International Flower Show 2026 at the Sabarmati Riverfront is expected to add cultural visibility and tourism-driven economic activity during the high-profile diplomatic visit.

Bengaluru leg and global context strengthen strategic relevance

Chancellor Merz will also travel to Bengaluru, India’s technology and innovation capital, underscoring Germany’s interest in digital transformation, startups, and deep-tech collaboration. The visit builds on momentum from the leaders’ last meeting at the G7 Summit in Canada and comes just ahead of the India-EU Summit scheduled for January 27, further elevating its geopolitical and economic significance.

Overall, the visit is expected to reaffirm a shared commitment to a forward-looking, people-centric partnership, while positioning India and Germany as key collaborators on regional and global challenges from sustainable development to global security and economic resilience.
