NEW DELHI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has prohibited Dabur India Ltd. from selling several food products carrying “100%” claims, stating that such labelling is misleading and violates the country’s food advertising regulations.

According to the food regulator, the action follows the detection of multiple products on the company’s website carrying claims that could mislead consumers regarding their purity and composition.

FSSAI Objects to ‘100%’ Claims on Dabur Products

In a social media post, FSSAI said it had issued a prohibition order to Dabur over the sale of products carrying claims such as:

  • 100% Natural
  • 100% Pure
  • 100% Purity Guaranteed
  • 100% Organic

The regulator said these claims appeared on a range of products, including:

  • Honey
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Virgin coconut oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Cow ghee
  • Coconut water
  • Coconut milk
  • Other food products

Regulator Says Claims Violate Advertising Rules

FSSAI stated that the use of such “100%” claims is ambiguous, unverifiable and likely to mislead consumers, making them inconsistent with the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising & Claims) Regulations, 2018.

The regulator said food businesses must ensure that advertising and product claims are accurate, scientifically verifiable and do not create a false impression about a product’s characteristics.

Dabur Responds to FSSAI Notice

In a statement, Dabur India confirmed that it has received the notice issued by FSSAI.

The company said it is currently reviewing the contents mentioned in the notice and examining the product information displayed on its website. It has not yet issued a detailed response regarding the regulator’s observations.
