Mumbai: Indian stock markets ended the special Diwali Muhurat Trading session on a subdued note on Sunday, November 8, as losses in banking and information technology stocks dragged the benchmark indices lower.
The BSE Sensex declined 28.62 points, or 0.04 per cent, to settle at 80,999.40. The NSE Nifty 50 fell 43.95 points, or 0.18 per cent, to close at 24,986.40.
Despite a positive start and intraday gains, the Nifty failed to sustain its upward momentum and finished below the psychologically important 25,000 level.
Sensex and Nifty Witness Volatile Trading
The Nifty touched an intraday high of 25,132 during the shortened trading session before giving up its gains.
The Sensex also witnessed volatility, moving between an intraday high of 81,442 and a low of 80,932 before ending nearly 29 points lower.
The decline reflected selling pressure in key heavyweight sectors, particularly banking and IT, which influenced the performance of the benchmark indices.
Banking and IT Stocks Weigh on Market
Banking stocks were among the major sources of pressure during the special session. The Nifty Bank and Nifty Private Bank indices recorded the steepest sectoral declines.
Among individual Nifty constituents, SBI Life Insurance, InterGlobe Aviation and Bharti Airtel were among the notable losers. Mahindra & Mahindra and InterGlobe Aviation also featured among the top laggards.
On the positive side, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Tata Steel emerged as major gainers during the session.
Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Outperform
While the benchmark indices ended lower, the broader market showed resilience.
The Nifty MidCap 100 advanced 0.13 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.94 per cent.
Sectoral performance was mixed, with Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare among the better-performing indices. The gains in these sectors helped limit the broader market’s weakness.
Market Outlook for Samvat 2083
Market experts maintained a constructive outlook for the coming Samvat year, while expecting returns to be more moderate and selective.
Market Analysts indicated that corporate earnings growth, rather than further expansion in market valuations, could become the primary driver of stock market performance.
They also highlighted the importance of focusing on quality companies, earnings resilience and prudent investment decisions as investors enter the new Hindu financial year.
