Purushottampur: At least six people, including two children, were killed and four others critically injured after a bus rammed into an auto-rickshaw near Ladkapalli Chhak under Purushottampur police station limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Friday.

According to police and local sources, the victims were travelling in the auto-rickshaw to the Singhasini Temple when the accident occurred.

The collision triggered a major rescue operation involving local residents and Fire Services personnel.

Ganjam Bus Auto Accident Leaves Multiple Dead

The deceased were identified as:

  • Mali Behera
  • Nrusingha Behera
  • Leelabati Behera
  • Neha Behera
  • Kiran Behera
  • A toddler

Police said around 10 people from Erendra village under K Nuagaon police station limits in Chikiti block were travelling together when the bus allegedly hit the auto-rickshaw from behind.

The impact reportedly dragged the vehicle for some distance, severely injuring the passengers.

The second-order effect of such fatal rural road accidents often exposes larger concerns around highway safety enforcement, overloaded public transport routes and emergency medical response gaps in semi-urban regions.

Rescue Operation Conducted by Locals and Fire Services

Following the crash, locals rushed to the spot and helped rescue trapped passengers along with Fire Services teams.

The injured were shifted to the Community Health Centre in Kodala for treatment.

Doctors later confirmed six deaths, while four critically injured passengers continue to undergo treatment.

Police have detained the bus driver for questioning and seized both vehicles involved in the accident.

Investigation Underway Into Fatal Odisha Road Accident

Authorities said the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and a detailed investigation is underway.

Police are examining:

  • The speed of the bus
  • Driver negligence
  • Road conditions
  • Vehicle safety compliance

Road accidents involving buses and passenger autos remain a recurring safety concern in Odisha, especially on busy inter-district routes where high-speed driving and overcrowding often increase risk factors.

The latest tragedy has once again raised concerns over transport safety standards and enforcement in rural and semi-urban areas of the state.
