Glenn Maxwell Retires from ODI Cricket, Concludes Glorious 13-Year Career

Published on

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs), drawing the curtain on a 13-year-long career in the format. Known for his explosive batting, sharp fielding, and handy off-spin, Maxwell leaves behind a significant legacy in white-ball cricket.

Maxwell debuted in ODIs in 2012 and quickly gained recognition for his aggressive style and ability to turn games around with both bat and ball. Over the years, he became a key part of Australia’s limited-overs setup, contributing to multiple series wins and playing a crucial role in Australia’s 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup triumph.

In a statement, Maxwell reflected on his journey, expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans. “It’s been an incredible ride. Representing Australia in ODIs has been one of the greatest honours of my life. I feel the time is right to step away and allow younger players to step in and take the team forward.”

Maxwell’s decision is believed to be driven by a desire to manage his workload and extend his career in T20 Internationals and domestic franchise cricket. He remains committed to the shorter formats, where his power-hitting and versatility continue to make him a valuable asset.

During his ODI career, Maxwell played 133 matches, scoring over 3,900 runs at a strike rate of nearly 125, and taking 60+ wickets. He holds the record for one of the fastest centuries in World Cup history and has been involved in numerous iconic moments, including his match-winning double century against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest ODI innings ever played.

Maxwell’s departure from ODIs marks the end of an era for Australian cricket, with fans and fellow cricketers celebrating his achievements and contributions to the game.
