Govt Approves ₹4,594 Crore Semiconductor Projects in Odisha, Punjab & Andhra Pradesh
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved four new semiconductor projects in India—spread across Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh—at an estimated cost of ₹4,594 crore.
Briefing the media in New Delhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move aims to build a strong ecosystem for the semiconductor and electronics sector.
Electronics Manufacturing Sees Record Growth
Vaishnaw highlighted that electronics manufacturing in India has grown six times in the last 11 years, while exports have surged eight times. The number of mobile manufacturing units has jumped from just 2 to over 300, and mobile phone exports have skyrocketed 127 times to ₹2 lakh crore.
He also mentioned that the government is extending support to domestic companies, startups, and MSMEs for chip design.
Semicon India 2025 to Host Global Partners
The minister announced that Semicon India 2025 will be held in New Delhi from September 2, with Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea participating as partner countries.
Other Major Cabinet Decisions
Lucknow Metro Phase 1B
The Cabinet approved the Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project between Charbagh and Vasant Kunj at a cost of ₹5,801 crore. The project will include 12 stations and is expected to be completed in five years.
Tato-II Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh
Approval was also granted for the Tato-II hydroelectric project in Shi Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh. With a capacity of 700 MW, the project will be completed in six years, providing a stable electricity supply and boosting regional development. Vaishnaw also noted that India’s non-fossil fuel capacity has now crossed 50%.
