ICMR to Procure Two More Mobile BSL-3 Labs

Published on

In a significant step toward enhancing India’s epidemic preparedness, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has initiated the procurement of two additional Mobile BSL-3 (MBSL-3) laboratories. These state-of-the-art mobile units are part of India’s ongoing effort to strengthen its public health infrastructure, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach regions.

RAMBAAN: India’s First Indigenous Mobile BSL-3 Lab

Named RAMBAAN (Rapid Action Mobile BSL-3 Advanced Analytical Network), the mobile labs are fully indigenous, field-deployable units capable of handling and diagnosing high-risk pathogens, both known and novel. These labs offer high-level biosafety capabilities that allow health authorities to respond swiftly during outbreaks.

Existing Units Deployed in Pune and Gorakhpur

Currently, two RAMBAAN units are operational — one at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, and another at the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Gorakhpur. With the addition of two more, ICMR aims to expand rapid response capabilities across more regions and reinforce India’s diagnostic network for epidemic control.

Strengthening Outbreak Surveillance and Public Health Delivery

The mobile labs play a critical role in on-site disease detection, helping reduce delays in diagnosis and allowing for faster containment measures. ICMR’s move comes amid growing global concerns about future pandemics and the need for agile, mobile, and high-safety diagnostic facilities.
