IMD Issues Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Forecast in Odisha on July 9–10

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha on July 9 and 10.

July 9 Forecast: Orange Alert for Mayurbhanj

  • Mayurbhanj district has been placed under an orange alert due to forecasts of very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
  • A yellow alert has been issued for the districts of:
    Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, and Boudh, where heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected.

July 10 Forecast: Widespread Showers Across Western and Southern Odisha

The following districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on July 10, with a yellow warning in effect:
Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Angul, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nawarangpur, and Koraput.

The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning accompanied by gusty surface winds (30–40 kmph) in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal. Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions, especially during outdoor activities.

Public Advisory

Authorities have urged the public to:

  • Avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas during heavy rain
  • Secure loose outdoor items and avoid sheltering under trees during storms
  • Stay tuned to local weather updates and emergency advisories

Emergency services have been placed on alert, and district administrations are monitoring the situation closely.
