PM Modi Holds Talks with Namibian President

Published on

Windhoek: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah today at the State House in Windhoek, as part of his historic visit to the southern African nation. The discussions focused on expanding the economic partnership between India and Namibia through collaboration in energy security, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.

Ceremonial Welcome and Diplomatic Engagement

Earlier in the day, PM Modi was received with a grand ceremonial welcome, including a 21-gun salute, at the State House. This marks the first visit of PM Modi to Namibia and only the third Prime Ministerial visit from India to the country in nearly three decades.

The visit reflects India’s renewed diplomatic outreach to the resource-rich African region, especially within the broader vision of South-South cooperation.

MoUs Expected in Key Sectors

Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed during the visit. These will focus on:

  • Enhancing energy security through joint ventures and technology sharing
  • Strengthening cooperation in healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors
  • Promoting investments and trade in strategic industries

In recognition of his contributions to bilateral relations, Prime Minister Modi will be conferred Namibia’s highest civilian award—a gesture symbolising the growing diplomatic and cultural ties between the two countries.

PM Modi is also scheduled to pay homage to Namibia’s Founding Father and first President, the late Dr. Sam Nujoma, as a mark of deep respect for Namibia’s liberation movement and nation-building efforts.

Later today, PM Modi will deliver a special address at the Namibian Parliament. This marks a significant diplomatic milestone, reinforcing India’s role as a strategic partner in Africa’s development and as a voice of the Global South.

This visit concludes PM Modi’s five-nation tour, which has also taken him to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Brazil, further showcasing India’s growing international footprint and commitment to inclusive global partnerships.
