India Creates Space History: Shubhanshu Shukla Becomes First Indian to Set Foot on ISS
India reached a historic space milestone today as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to set foot on the International Space Station (ISS). The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, successfully docked with the Harmony module of the ISS at 4:00 PM IST, marking India’s return to human spaceflight after 41 years.
Shukla, a native of Lucknow, is now the second Indian in space, following Rakesh Sharma’s iconic mission in 1984. The event is being hailed as a landmark achievement in India’s space exploration journey.
About the Axiom-4 Mission
The Axiom-4 mission, a collaboration involving Axiom Space, SpaceX, NASA, and international space agencies, carries four astronauts from:
- India: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (Pilot)
- USA: Peggy Whitson (Commander)
- Poland: Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Mission Specialist)
- Hungary: Tibor Kapu (Mission Specialist)
They are scheduled for a 14-day scientific expedition in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) aboard the ISS.
India’s Growing Space Leadership
This mission is more than just symbolic—it’s a reflection of India’s rising prominence in global space innovation. The success of Axiom-4 reinforces India’s ability to:
- Contribute to cutting-edge space research
- Promote sustainability in space
- Play a key role in international missions
As part of the mission, Shubhanshu Shukla will conduct advanced experiments on food and space nutrition. These experiments are a result of a collaborative effort between ISRO, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and NASA.
Key Focus Areas:
- Developing sustainable life-support systems for long-duration space travel
- Studying the impact of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae, a nutrient-dense food candidate for future missions
- Analyzing transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic changes in algae cultivated in space compared to those grown on Earth
These studies could revolutionize the way astronauts are nourished during extended space missions and pave the way for sustainable human presence beyond Earth.
A Proud Moment for India
With this mission, India reclaims its place in the elite league of spacefaring nations, and Shukla’s journey inspires a new generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers. As the Indian flag finds representation aboard the ISS, the nation celebrates not just a technological success, but a visionary leap into the future of space exploration.
