The 14th edition of the India-Maldives bilateral military exercise EKUVERIN will begin tomorrow in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and continue till the 15th of this month. The Indian Army confirmed the update through a social media post, noting that the annual drill will once again involve participation from both the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Forces.
Aim and Scope of the India Maldives Exercise
This year’s exercise focuses on improving coordination between both forces during counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations. The training modules are designed to cover semi-urban, jungle and coastal terrains, ensuring that both sides can effectively operate together across diverse conditions.
Use of Advanced Technology in the India Maldives Exercise
The Indian Army stated that the joint drill will incorporate niche and emerging technologies to boost mission readiness. Both nations will exchange best practices, underlining their shared dedication to regional peace, maritime safety and overall security in the Indian Ocean region.
EKUVERIN’s Role in Strengthening Defence Cooperation
The word “Ekuverin” translates to “Friends,” reflecting the spirit of the exercise. Conducted alternately in India and the Maldives, the drill has become a cornerstone of the defence partnership between the two nations. It enhances trust, operational synergy and mutual understanding among the participating troops.
Other Major Joint Training Drills with the Maldives
Apart from EKUVERIN, India and the Maldives also conduct the bilateral exercise “Ekatha” and the trilateral exercise “Dosti,” which includes Sri Lanka. Together, these drills highlight the strategic depth and long-standing cooperation between the countries in defence and maritime security.
