India Ranks 3rd Globally in Organ Transplants: JP Nadda
New Delhi: On the occasion of the 15th Organ Donation Day, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda celebrated India’s record-breaking achievement in the field of organ transplantation. In 2023 alone, India performed nearly 18,900 organ transplants, the highest ever in a single year in the country.
India Now Ranks Third in Global Organ Transplants
With this milestone, India ranks third globally in total organ transplants, following the United States and China. Speaking at the event in New Delhi, Mr. Nadda said this achievement reflects both medical progress and growing societal awareness about the critical value of organ donation.
“Each donor is a silent hero whose altruistic decision can give a new lease of life to multiple individuals,” he noted.
Public Participation and Awareness on the Rise
According to data from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), over 3 lakh citizens pledged to donate their organs in 2023, signaling a surge in public commitment.
To honor their courage and selflessness, Mr. Nadda felicitated families of donors and recipients, calling them “pillars of a compassionate society.”
Launch of Key Publications
To further raise awareness, the Union Minister released several important documents, including:
- NOTTO’s Annual Report
- New e-Newsletter
- Three awareness booklets:
- Organ Donation Awareness
- Organ Health through Ayurveda and Yoga
- Best Practices by States in Organ Donation
These resources aim to educate the public, streamline donor registrations, and strengthen coordination among states.
Focus on Infrastructure & Medical Training
Mr. Nadda emphasized that the government is committed to:
- Expanding organ transplant infrastructure
- Training more specialized medical professionals
- Promoting inter-state coordination
- Enhancing public education campaigns
The Minister called upon all citizens to view organ donation not just as a medical need, but as a societal movement driven by empathy, awareness, and collective responsibility.
“In a country as large and compassionate as India, no life should be lost due to lack of organ availability,” he added.
India’s success in organ transplantation showcases the nation’s growing strength in healthcare and a collective will to save lives. As awareness spreads and infrastructure strengthens, India is well on its way to becoming a global leader in ethical, inclusive, and life-saving medical practices.
