India Shocks Thailand 2-1 to Qualify for AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 After 22 Years
In a landmark achievement, the Indian women’s football team defeated hosts Thailand 2-1 in their final Group B match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Chiang Mai on Saturday, securing a spot in the main tournament for the first time in 22 years.
Midfielder Sangita Basfore was the star of the night, scoring in the 29th and 74th minutes to power India past a higher-ranked Thailand side. Thailand’s only goal came early in the second half from Chatchawan Rodhong.
Heading into the match, both India and Thailand were locked on nine points and an identical +22 goal difference. The clash at the 700th Anniversary Stadium was essentially a do-or-die battle, with the winner sealing the top spot and a place in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia.
India last earned a direct spot in the main draw in 2003 and featured in the 2022 edition only as hosts before having to withdraw due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the squad.
Early Scare and Comeback Win
Thailand dominated the early minutes and had a goal disallowed for offside in just the second minute. India gradually gained momentum, and Basfore broke the deadlock with a stunning half-volley in the 29th minute.
Despite holding the lead at half-time, India conceded immediately after the break, with Rodhong’s intended cross beating the Indian keeper. Thailand nearly went ahead when Karnjananthat Phomsri struck the post, but India held their nerve.
With relentless Thai pressure, the Indian defence was tested, but Basfore once again stepped up, nodding home the winner off a pinpoint cross from Shilky Devi.
Underdogs Triumph in Hostile Territory
Ranked 24 places below Thailand (India is world No. 70), the Indian team, led by coach Crispin Chhetri, overcame immense odds. Their qualification campaign included dominant wins over Mongolia (13-0), Timor-Leste (4-0), and Iraq (5-0), but the victory over Thailand was undoubtedly the highlight.
The Road Ahead
With this win, India has now qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in Australia, marking a new chapter in the team’s journey and reigniting hopes for women’s football in the country.
