India, UAE Sign Key Maritime Security Agreement to Boost Regional Safety

New Delhi: In a significant step to bolster maritime ties, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the United Arab Emirates National Guard Command have signed a crucial agreement focused on Maritime Security and Safety Cooperation. The signing ceremony took place in New Delhi during the 13th Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between the two countries.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked by Director General of Indian Coast Guard Paramesh Sivamani and UAE Commander of the Coast Guard Group Brigadier Staff Khalid Obaid Shamsi.

Focus Areas of Cooperation

The agreement aims to foster a safe, secure, and sustainable maritime environment in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf region. It covers a wide range of operational and strategic areas including:

• Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR)
• Combating transnational maritime crimes
• Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE)
• Marine Pollution Response (MPR)
• Joint capacity building and training initiatives

According to the ICG, this pact reflects the shared commitment of India and the UAE to deepen professional linkages and collaborative engagements for maritime security.

10th Agreement With Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs)

This is India’s 10th such maritime agreement with a Friendly Foreign Country (FFC). It reaffirms India’s broader vision of regional security cooperation, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia regions.

The agreement also complements India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative and supports UAE’s maritime security framework, creating synergy in tackling piracy, smuggling, illegal fishing, and environmental threats.

India and the UAE have steadily enhanced defence and security cooperation in recent years. The 13th JDCC meeting marks a growing convergence on strategic issues, especially in maritime safety, trade routes protection, and coastal resilience.

The UAE, with its strong port infrastructure and strategic location in the Persian Gulf, is a vital partner in India’s maritime outreach and naval diplomacy.

The signing of the India-UAE Maritime Security and Safety Cooperation Agreement is another milestone in their deepening defence partnership. As maritime challenges grow more complex, institutional coordination between coast guard forces will be pivotal for ensuring regional peace, disaster response, and economic security.
