Indian Air Force rescue first batch of stranded civilians from Chaten in North Sikkim

Published on

The Indian Air Force has launched rescue and relief operations in Sikkim as the state reels under the impact of landslides and floods triggered by heavy rainfall. The IAF rescued the first batch of stranded civilians from Chaten in North Sikkim.

Helicopters have been deployed to evacuate stranded tourists and injured army personnel in the Mangan district. The NDRF, in coordination with the IAF, has rescued injured soldiers, their families, and tourists using two Mi-17 V5 helicopters.

Nearly 150 tourists remain stranded in Lachen due to multiple landslides in the area. Meanwhile, three army personnel lost their lives and four others were injured in a landslide at Chaten on Sunday.

Sikkim Chief Secretary R. Telang chaired a high-level review meeting in Gangtok to assess the situation in Mangan and directed all agencies to extend full support for relief efforts.

Meanwhile, all tourists stranded in Lachung were successfully evacuated by the district administration yesterday. Our correspondent reports that continuous rain and landslides have severely disrupted road connectivity in the Mangan district.
