Indian Army Denies Role in Myanmar Operation That Allegedly Killed 19 ULFA-I Cadres

Published on

Guwahati: The Indian Army has firmly denied any role in a reported cross-border military operation in Myanmar that allegedly killed 19 cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), including three top-ranking leaders.

Speaking to media in Guwahati, Defence PRO Colonel MS Rawat stated that the Indian Army has no inputs or involvement in any such operation targeting ULFA-I camps across the border.

“There are no inputs available with the Indian Army on such an operation,” Colonel Rawat clarified.

In a statement released by the insurgent outfit, ULFA-I alleged that its eastern headquarters in Myanmar was attacked using drones in the early hours of the previous day. The group claimed that 19 of its members were killed, including its self-styled Lieutenant General Nayan Medhi, also known as Nayan Asom.

The statement further alleged that fresh strikes were carried out during the last rites, killing two more senior members — Brigadier Ganesh Asom and Colonel Pradip Asom.

Assam CM Also Dismisses State Involvement

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also dismissed any involvement of the state machinery in the alleged strike.

“There has been no strike from the soil of Assam. The Assam Police is not involved in any such operation,” the Chief Minister stated while speaking to the press.

Background: Who Is ULFA-I?

ULFA-I, led by fugitive commander Paresh Baruah, is a banned insurgent group operating primarily in Assam and parts of Myanmar. The group has long been involved in anti-India activities and has camps across the India-Myanmar border.

The latest claims by the group have not been independently verified, and the denial by Indian authorities raises further questions about the actual nature and origin of the attack.
