India’s Exports Grow 6% in Q1 FY2025, Trade Deficit Narrows as Imports Dip

Published on

India’s total exports surged by 6% in the first quarter of the 2025 financial year, crossing the $210 billion mark, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This growth reflects the country’s economic resilience amid ongoing global uncertainties, with solid performance seen in both goods and services exports.

Strong Year-on-Year Improvement in Export Performance

Commerce and Industry Secretary Sunil Barthwal, speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, emphasized the notable improvement compared to the same quarter last year. He credited the growth to rising demand in major global markets and proactive government support through export-friendly policies.

Imports Fall in June, Contributing to Trade Deficit Reduction

In June 2025, India’s imports fell by 3.71%, dropping to $53.92 billion from $56 billion in June 2024. This dip in imports played a key role in reducing the country’s trade deficit slightly, offering a more favorable trade balance.

June Export Figures Show Continued Strength

India’s overall exports for June—including both goods and services—rose to $67.98 billion, up from $63.83 billion a year earlier. Pharmaceuticals, electronics, and IT services were among the top-performing sectors, helping to sustain export momentum despite global headwinds.

Trade Deficit Remains Manageable

India’s trade deficit in June stood at $18.78 billion, indicating a stable and manageable gap between imports and exports.

Outlook Positive Amid Global Shifts

The Commerce Ministry expressed confidence in maintaining this export momentum through the coming quarters, citing ongoing developments in global supply chains and the formation of new trade agreements.
