India’s First Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Plant to Come Up in Odisha

Published on

BHUBANESWAR: In a major boost to India’s semiconductor ambitions, power electronics chip company SiCSem has begun construction of the country’s first end-to-end silicon carbide semiconductor plant in Odisha. The project, worth around ₹2,000 crore, marks a major milestone in India’s push for indigenous semiconductor manufacturing.

The integrated facility is expected to become operational by 2027-28. Once completed, it will have the capacity to process 60,000 silicon carbide (SiC) wafers annually and package about 9.6 crore units, significantly strengthening India’s high-power electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

SiCSem’s Silicon Carbide Semiconductor Plant to Boost Advanced Technology in Odisha

Union IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing the event via video message, said the initiative represents a “dream come true” for bringing advanced technology to Odisha. He highlighted the project’s emphasis on bridging industry and academia for sustainable technological growth.

“Our dream of bringing advanced technology to Odisha is coming true today, and our special focus is on enabling a seamless integration of industry and academia. In this regard, we are partnering with IIT Bhubaneswar for a semiconductor research lab,” Vaishnaw said.

The Union Minister added that he had approved ₹4.95 crore from his MPLAD fund for setting up the NaMo Semiconductor Lab at IIT Bhubaneswar.

India’s Electronics Sector Sees Rapid Growth Under Modi Government

Highlighting the country’s progress in the electronics sector, Vaishnaw noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s electronics manufacturing industry has grown six times in the past 11 years. Meanwhile, electronics exports have increased eightfold in the last 12 years, making India the third-largest exporter of electronic items in the world.

“We are now third largest exporter of electronic items in the world. I urge the state government to take up semiconductor industries aggressively. The Centre will support Odisha in all matters. We can together make reforms and policy for the development of the sector,” he said.

The minister also suggested that Odisha formulate a Data Centre Policy, as major global industries are keen to establish their data hubs in India.

Odisha Government Extends Support to Semiconductor Development

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, state Electronics and IT Minister Mukesh Mahaling, and senior government officials were present at the groundbreaking ceremony.

SiCSem Managing Director Guru Thalapaneni said the company’s integrated facility will not only produce 60,000 SiC wafers annually but also package 9.6 crore semiconductor units.

The plant will cater to high-voltage applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and power inverters, where silicon carbide chips are essential due to their efficiency and durability.

The SiCSem project, a subsidiary of Archean Chemical Industries, received cabinet approval on August 12 this year.
