INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri to be Commissioned Together in Visakhapatnam

On 26 August 2025, Visakhapatnam will witness a landmark moment in India’s naval history when the Indian Navy commissions INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri on the same day. This is the first time two major frontline frigates will be inducted simultaneously, showcasing India’s rapid strides in naval modernisation and indigenous defence production.

INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri

The uniqueness of this event lies in the fact that the ships are products of two leading Indian shipyards:

  • INS Udaygiri – Second ship in the Project 17A stealth frigate series, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
  • INS Himgiri – First P17A frigate built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

Adding to the significance, INS Udaygiri is the 100th warship designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB), marking a major milestone in indigenous ship design.

Cutting-Edge Stealth and Combat Features

The P17A frigates represent a significant upgrade over the Shivalik-class vessels, featuring:

  • 6,700-tonne displacement (5% larger than Shivalik-class).
  • Stealth-optimised hulls with reduced radar signatures.
  • CODOG propulsion for both cruising efficiency and high-speed manoeuvres.
  • Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for centralised control.

Combat Systems Include:

  • Supersonic surface-to-surface missiles.
  • Medium-range surface-to-air missiles.
  • 76 mm main naval gun.
  • Close-in weapon systems (30 mm & 12.7 mm).
  • Advanced anti-submarine warfare systems with torpedoes and sonar.

Boost to Make in India and Defence Jobs

Built with inputs from over 200 MSMEs, these frigates have created:

  • 4,000 direct jobs
  • 10,000+ indirect jobs

They stand as strong symbols of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the defence manufacturing sector.

Rigorous Sea Trials Before Deployment

Before commissioning, both ships successfully completed exhaustive trials, testing:

  • Hull strength and propulsion efficiency.
  • Navigation and communication systems.
  • Firefighting and damage control capabilities.

Part of India’s 2025 Naval Expansion

The induction of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri is part of a larger naval modernisation push in 2025, which has already seen the addition of:

  • Destroyer INS Surat
  • Frigate INS Nilgiri
  • Submarine INS Vaghsheer
  • ASW Shallow Water Craft INS Arnala
  • Diving Support Vessel INS Nistar
