Deepak Chahar, a former player who had previously contributed significantly with the bat, shocked the club early on. The Yellow Army startled everyone by changing their starting lineup and promoting impact substitute Rahul Tripathi over Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, Chahar ruined CSK’s experiment by packing Tripathi for 2(3).
Gaikwad then entered the fray and snatched the game away from MI, hitting 53 off 26 balls to clinch his fastest half-century in the IPL. However, MI rookie Vignesh Puthur upended the CSK celebration by taking three wickets (Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda) in as many overs to put his team back in the game.
Will Jacks also put pressure on the hosts by dismissing Sam Curran in the middle overs, leaving CSK reeling at 116/5 at one point.
However, Ravindra Jadeja and Rachin kept the scoreboard ticking until an unnecessary mix-up in the 19th over ended in the Indian’s dismissal. Dube and Hooda departed with single-digit scores, while Jadeja contributed a critical 17(18).
Previously, a late cameo by Chahar helped MI compile a decent 155/9 after being asked to bat. Chahar finished unbeaten on 28 from 15 balls, giving himself and the other bowlers something to defend. Khaleel Ahmed stung the visitors early with two punches.
The medium-pacer dismissed Rohit Sharma for a duck and then cleaned up Ryan Rickelton for 13(7). He finished with three wickets and 29 runs in his full allotment of overs. The spinners also played a crucial role in derailing MI throughout the middle overs.
Noor Ahmad was the star performance, taking four scalps in his first appearance for the Yellow Army. Ravichandran Ashwin, who returned to the franchise after nearly a decade, contributed a wicket, while MS Dhoni rolled back the years with a lightning quick stumping of Suryakumar Yadav (29 off 26).
