India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has held three discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister in recent days, focusing on shipping safety and India’s energy security, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
The talks come at a time of heightened regional tensions that have raised concerns over the safety of global shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil supplies.
Speaking during a media briefing on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the diplomatic conversations but said it would be premature to share further details.
Jaishankar Iran Talks Focus on Shipping Safety
The latest round of discussions between the two leaders reportedly centered on maritime security and energy supply concerns.
According to the MEA, the conversations took place amid growing uncertainty in the region, which has sparked concerns about the stability of shipping routes used for transporting oil and other goods.
“External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and the Foreign Minister of Iran have had three conversations in recent days. The last one discussed issues related to safety of shipping and India’s energy security,” Jaiswal said during the briefing.
However, he added that the government would not comment further at this stage.
Reports of Oil Shipments Through Strait of Hormuz
The MEA spokesperson was responding to media queries regarding reports suggesting that Iran had allowed oil shipments destined for India to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaiswal said he did not yet have complete information about the reports involving two ships passing through the waterway.
He added that the government may provide a more detailed update later.
India Assisting Nationals Leaving Iran
Apart from diplomatic discussions, the government is also focusing on the safety of Indian citizens currently in Iran.
According to the MEA, about 9,000 Indian nationals were present in the country, including students, professionals, businesspeople, seafarers and pilgrims.
Authorities have already helped several citizens, mostly students, return to India.
Evacuation Support Through Azerbaijan and Armenia
Indian authorities have also relocated several nationals from Tehran to safer areas within Iran.
For those wishing to leave the country, the government is assisting with travel through land borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia, where evacuees can take commercial flights back to India.
The MEA said the embassy is helping with visas and coordinating land border crossings.
Officials have also urged Indian nationals planning to leave Iran through these routes to follow the advisories issued by the Indian embassy to ensure safe travel.
