  • Over 47,000 acres of crops and thousands of homes damaged

Bhubaneswar: The alarming Odisha elephant attacks deaths data reveals the scale of the human wildlife conflict in the state, with 443 people losing their lives and 264 elephants dying over the past three years. The figures, presented in the state assembly by Forest, Environment & Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntiaon Tuesday. Highlight a growing crisis that is impacting both rural communities and wildlife conservation efforts.

The data points to a deepening conflict driven by habitat pressure, movement patterns, and increasing human activity near forest areas.

Odisha Elephant Attacks Deaths Data: Scale of Damage

Beyond fatalities, the impact on livelihoods has been severe. Between 2022-23 and 2024-25, a total of 1,050 houses were completely destroyed, while 5,587 homes suffered partial damage.

Agriculture has also taken a major hit, with over 47,499 acres of crops affected during the same period. This has added economic stress to already vulnerable rural households.

The widespread damage indicates that the conflict is not limited to isolated incidents but is affecting entire regions.

Odisha Elephant Attacks Deaths Data Shows Habitat and Corridor Gaps

Why Human-Elephant Conflict Is Rising

One of the key concerns highlighted is the absence of clearly demarcated elephant corridors in the state. Without defined movement paths, elephants often stray into human settlements in search of food and water.

Shrinking habitats, forest fragmentation, and agricultural expansion are forcing elephants into closer contact with humans, increasing the likelihood of conflict.

Government Measures to Control Conflict

The state government has outlined multiple strategies to manage the situation. These include habitat improvement, plantation drives for elephant food, and development of grazing areas.

Infrastructure measures such as trenches, rock barriers, and solar-powered fencing are being implemented in sensitive zones. Community-based initiatives are also being strengthened through local committees.

Odisha Elephant Attacks Deaths Data: Monitoring and Prevention Efforts

Technology and Early Warning Systems

Around 1,420 early warning systems have been deployed across forests to track elephant movement and alert nearby villages.

Additionally, anti-poaching camps, surveillance technologies, and awareness campaigns are being used to reduce risks for both humans and animals.

Wildlife Deaths Raise Conservation Concerns

Out of 264 elephant deaths, half were due to unnatural causes, raising serious conservation concerns. The data also revealed deaths of other wildlife, including tigers and leopards, with a significant number linked to poaching.

The situation reflects a dual challenge. Protecting human lives while conserving wildlife requires coordinated action, long-term planning, and stronger ground-level implementation.
