Paradip: Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the blast furnace and construction works of JSW Steel’s mega integrated steel plant at Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district.

The project, coming up at Dhinkia in the Ersama region, involves an investment of Rs 1.25 lakh crore, making it one of the biggest industrial investments in Odisha’s history.

JSW Steel Paradip Project to Boost Odisha Industry

Describing the occasion as a “golden chapter” in Odisha’s industrial development, the Chief Minister said the state is moving steadily towards becoming the “Steel Capital” of India.

The integrated steel complex will be developed in two phases and is expected to produce nearly 24 million tonnes of steel annually.

The project will also include:

  • A 12 million tonne cement plant
  • A 900 MW captive power system
  • A dedicated jetty

The second-order effect of the mega project could significantly reshape Odisha’s industrial ecosystem by accelerating port-led development, boosting ancillary industries and creating long-term employment opportunities.

Steel Production Expected by 2028

Speaking in the presence of Sajjan Jindal and senior officials of Japan-based JFE Steel, Majhi assured full support for speedy implementation of the project.

He claimed that delays under the previous government had stalled the project for years, adding that the current administration fast-tracked execution after assuming office.

According to the Chief Minister, steel production from the plant is expected to begin by 2028.

Odisha Expanding Global Industrial Partnerships

Majhi also announced that Odisha would soon sign a “Sister States” agreement with Japan’s Tottori Prefecture to strengthen cooperation in:

  • Industry
  • Tourism
  • Education

He further referred to another proposed Rs 30,000 crore project involving JFE Steel at Jharsuguda.

Paradip Planned as Major Industrial and Maritime Hub

The Odisha government outlined an ambitious vision to transform Paradip into a major industrial and maritime centre similar to Mundra Port.

The proposed development strategy includes:

  • Expansion of industrial infrastructure
  • Cruise terminal development
  • Mega shipbuilding complex
  • Port-led economic growth

The Chief Minister also highlighted plans for the Paradip-Cuttack-Bhubaneswar-Puri Economic Corridor, expected to receive Rs 5,000 crore in central assistance.

Officials estimate the corridor alone could generate over one lakh jobs in the Paradip region.

Odisha Targets Large-Scale Industrial Growth

According to the Chief Minister, Odisha approved 433 projects worth Rs 8.5 lakh crore over the last two years with the potential to generate more than five lakh jobs.

Groundwork for 148 projects has already been completed, reportedly creating employment opportunities for nearly 2.37 lakh youths.

Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain described the JSW project as a historic step for Jagatsinghpur’s industrial growth and assured continued government support for investors in the state.
