Lucknow: The Kanwar Yatra 2026 will begin on July 30, prompting authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to implement extensive security and traffic management measures to facilitate the movement of millions of devotees. Officials have introduced route diversions, surveillance systems and enhanced policing to ensure the annual pilgrimage is conducted safely and with minimal disruption.

The arrangements come as large numbers of Kanwariyas are expected to travel to Haridwar and other holy sites during the sacred Hindu month of Shravan (Sawan) to collect Ganga water for offering at Shiva temples.

Kanwar Yatra 2026 Traffic Diversions Announced in Uttar Pradesh

Muzaffarnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma said the entry of heavy vehicles into the district will remain prohibited from the night of July 29-30 until August 12.

On National Highway-58, the traffic plan includes:

  • From July 29-30 to August 4, the left carriageway from the Haridwar side will be reserved exclusively for Kanwariyas, while the right carriageway will remain open for light vehicles travelling from Meerut and Haridwar.
  • From August 4 to August 12, both carriageways of NH-58 will be reserved exclusively for Kanwar pilgrims, with regular traffic diverted to alternate routes.

Authorities have advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance and follow official traffic advisories during the pilgrimage period.

Security Strengthened Across Major Pilgrimage Routes

Joint Commissioner of Police Rajeev Narayan Mishra said the Police Commissionerate has been divided into 20 zones and 60 sectors to strengthen security.

Key arrangements include:

  • 28 temporary police posts along Kanwar routes.
  • Around 3,000 CCTV cameras installed at strategic locations.
  • Two-kilometre patrol beats for continuous monitoring.
  • Liaison officers assigned to coordinate with Kanwar groups.
  • Enhanced surveillance around liquor and meat shops situated along pilgrimage routes.

Senior police officials are conducting regular inspections to ensure all security and traffic arrangements remain effective throughout the yatra.

Kanwar Yatra 2026 Preparations Completed in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the state has completed preparations for the annual pilgrimage, including arrangements for sanitation, accommodation, transportation, security and the collection of holy Ganga water.

He said water police personnel have been deployed, traffic diversions implemented and comprehensive safety measures put in place to facilitate the smooth movement of devotees. During a review meeting in Haridwar, the Chief Minister directed officials to prioritise pilgrim safety and ensure efficient management throughout the festival.

The Kanwar Yatra, observed during the holy month of Sawan, is one of India’s largest annual religious pilgrimages, during which devotees of Lord Shiva collect sacred Ganga water and offer it at Shiva temples across the country.
