Their wins guaranteed at least bronze medals, adding to India’s growing medal tally and reinforcing the country’s strong presence in the boxing competition.
The latest victories came on another productive day for the Indian contingent, with multiple boxers progressing to the last four across different weight categories.
Commonwealth Games 2026 Boxing, Ankush Dominates 80kg Quarterfinal
Ankush produced a commanding display to defeat Jade Micock of Seychelles by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the men’s 80kg quarterfinal.
The Indian boxer dictated the pace from the opening bell, using sharp combinations and effective movement to control the contest. He impressed with powerful left-hand punches, including a clean left hook in the first round, earning unanimous approval from all five judges.
Maintaining his dominance in the second round, Ankush continued to land accurate punches while preventing his opponent from settling into the bout. With victory within reach, he boxed cautiously in the final round, avoiding unnecessary risks before sealing another unanimous verdict to book his place in the semifinals.
Narender Berwal Secures Hard-Fought Victory
Narender Berwal faced a much tougher challenge in the men’s 90+kg quarterfinal against Michael Seko of Samoa.
The Indian heavyweight edged the contest through a 3-2 split decision after a closely fought encounter. During the final round, Narender landed a decisive punch that forced the referee to administer a standing count against Seko. Although the Samoan boxer recovered, Narender did enough to convince the judges and secure a place in the semifinals.
Commonwealth Games 2026 Boxing Boosts India’s Medal Hopes
Narender became the fifth Indian boxer to reach the semifinals on Wednesday, joining Sachin Siwach, Arundhati Choudhary, Sakshi Chaudhary and Ankush in the medal rounds.
India’s overall medal tally at the Commonwealth Games has now reached 12 medals, comprising:
- 2 Gold
- 7 Silver
- 3 Bronze
