Kerala Welcomes South West Monsoon with Early Arrival in 2025

Published on

The long-anticipated monsoon has finally arrived. Kerala officially welcomed the South West Monsoon on May 24, marking the start of India’s vital four-month rainy season. This early arrival is significant, as it precedes the usual onset date of June 1 by several days.

India Meteorological Department Confirms Early Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the monsoon’s arrival on Saturday. Notably, this marks the first time since 2009 that the monsoon has hit Kerala as early as May 24. Last week, the IMD had accurately predicted a likely onset by May 27, with a margin of error of four days.

Scientific Criteria for Monsoon Declaration Met

The declaration was based on strict meteorological benchmarks. For the monsoon to be officially declared, at least 60% of the 14 key weather stations in Kerala and nearby regions must record 2.5 mm or more rainfall for two consecutive days. This condition was fulfilled this week.

Additional criteria included:

  • Westerly winds extending up to the 600 hPa level
  • Zonal wind speeds between 15–20 knots at 925 hPa
  • Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) levels below 200 W/m²

Once all these benchmarks were met, the IMD made the official announcement.

State Experiences Heavy Rains and Disruptions

Since Friday, Kerala has witnessed widespread rainfall. Several areas have reported waterlogging, fallen trees, and traffic snarls. The persistent showers have disrupted normal life, particularly in the central and southern districts.

Authorities Urge Caution Amid Weather Disruptions

Revenue Minister K. Rajan addressed the press on Saturday, stating that the administration is closely monitoring the situation. Emergency response teams are on high alert.

He urged residents to remain cautious, especially during long-distance travel. Checking traffic and weather updates before heading out is highly advisable.

Monsoon to Move Northwards in Coming Weeks

The onset in Kerala is just the beginning. The monsoon will now start its journey northward, gradually covering the entire subcontinent. By mid-July, most parts of India are expected to receive monsoonal rains.

Farmers, hydrologists, and policymakers closely watch this period, as the monsoon directly impacts agriculture, reservoirs, and overall economic activity.

Kerala’s early monsoon signals a promising start to the season. With weather conditions aligning precisely with meteorological expectations, the state is gearing up for weeks of rain. Authorities remain vigilant, and residents are advised to stay safe and informed.
