Lakshya Sen, Satwik-Chirag Crash Out of Japan Open; India’s Campaign Ends
India’s campaign at the Japan Open Super 750 came to a disappointing end on Thursday as Lakshya Sen and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bowed out in the second round, failing to advance further in the prestigious BWF tournament.
Lakshya Sen Falls to Local Favorite Kodai Naraoka
World No. 18 Lakshya Sen suffered a straight-game defeat to Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, losing 19-21, 11-21 in a match that lasted just under an hour. The 23-year-old Indian, who had impressed in the first round with a solid 21-11, 21-18 win over China’s Wang Zheng Xing, could not replicate that form against the crafty Japanese shuttler.
Satwik-Chirag Falter Against Familiar Foes
India’s hopes in men’s doubles were dashed as the star duo of Satwik and Chirag lost to fifth-seeded Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China in 22-24, 14-21 straight games. Despite leading 18-14 in the opening game, the Indians failed to capitalise, allowing their Chinese opponents to stage a comeback.
This defeat marks the fourth consecutive loss for the Indian pair against the Chinese team, extending their head-to-head record to 2-7 in favor of Wei Keng and Wang Chang. The Chinese duo, silver medallists at the Paris Olympics, once again proved too strong with superior court control and defence.
Anupama Upadhyaya Also Exits in Round of 16
The final Indian in contention, Anupama Upadhyaya, put up a spirited fight against second-seeded Wang Zhi Yi of China but went down 21-13, 11-21, 12-21 in a 55-minute women’s singles clash. The 19-year-old showcased promise in the opening game but couldn’t sustain the momentum.
With all players eliminated by the round of 16, India’s campaign at the Japan Open 2025 has officially come to an end, raising concerns ahead of upcoming BWF World Tour events.
