Low Pressure Forms Over Bay of Bengal; Four-Day Rain Likely in South Odisha

Published on

A low-pressure area developed over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, bringing the possibility of widespread rainfall across Odisha over the next four days. The system, forming under an upper air cyclonic circulation, is expected to influence weather patterns across coastal and southern districts, prompting alerts for rain and thundershower activity.

Low Pressure in Bay of Bengal Expected to Intensify into Depression

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system formed around 5:30 am over the southwest Bay of Bengal and intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area by afternoon. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and strengthen into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, near north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by Wednesday afternoon.

Bhubaneswar Met Centre Director Manorama Mohanty said the depression is expected to continue moving toward the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh, intensifying further in the next 24 hours.

Rainfall and Thunderstorm Predictions for Odisha Districts

The IMD has forecasted light to moderate rainfall in several regions of Odisha till October 25. Southern districts are likely to experience heavier spells due to the proximity of the low-pressure system. Local convective activities and moisture inflow from the sea are also enhancing rain prospects.

Likely Rainfall Areas (till Oct 25)Expected Weather
Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, RayagadaModerate to heavy rain
Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, JajpurLight to moderate rain
Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, KeonjharThunderstorm and lightning

IMD Alerts Fishermen and Coastal Residents

The Met department has urged fishermen not to venture into the sea due to expected rough conditions and gusty winds along the coast. Residents in coastal areas have been advised to stay alert for lightning and thundershower activities, particularly in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, and adjoining districts.

Low Pressure May Extend Wet Spell Beyond Four Days

Officials added that if the system intensifies further or moves slowly inland, rainfall may continue beyond the four-day forecast. Continuous monitoring is being carried out by the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre to issue updated advisories.
