Malayalam Actor Minu Muneer Arrested for Defamatory Posts Against Balachandra Menon

Published on

Malayalam actor Minu Muneer was arrested on Monday by the Kochi City cybercrime police for allegedly making defamatory and obscene social media posts targeting veteran actor-director Balachandra Menon. The arrest follows a complaint filed by Menon accusing Muneer of online harassment and character assassination.

The 45-year-old actor surrendered before the cybercrime police station after the Kerala High Court rejected her anticipatory bail plea and instructed her to cooperate with the investigation. She was later released on bail, as per court directions.

Muneer is one of two individuals named in the FIR, the other being Sangeeth Luis (45), who allegedly issued threatening phone calls to Menon on September 13 and 14, 2024.

The case, initially registered on October 2, 2024, includes charges under several laws:

  • Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 351(2) – Criminal intimidation
  • IT Act Section 67 – Publishing or transmitting obscene material electronically
  • Kerala Police Act Section 120(o) – Causing nuisance through communication

According to the complaint, Muneer repeatedly shared derogatory content, including photos of the complainant, and encouraged vulgar public comments on social media platforms.

The incident reportedly occurred in the aftermath of the release of the Hema Committee report, which highlighted systemic abuse and gender-based issues within the Malayalam film industry.

Police investigations are ongoing, and both accused will face further legal proceedings in the coming weeks.
