Kolkata: As India prepare to face South Africa in a crucial two-match Test series starting November 13, all eyes are on the team’s composition and one major omission has caught everyone’s attention. Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami, one of India’s most consistent red-ball performers, has once again been left out, sparking questions about his future in Test cricket.

Captain Shubman Gill’s latest remarks ahead of the series have only intensified speculation about whether Shami’s illustrious Test career is nearing its end. Speaking at the pre-match press conference in Kolkata, Gill acknowledged Shami’s exceptional quality but hinted that the team management is focused on building for the future.

Gill Acknowledges Shami’s Class, But Hints at Transition

“There aren’t many bowlers of Shami bhai’s quality. But when you look at the performances of others guys like Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna and also what Siraj and Bumrah have done for us, it becomes a tough call,” Gill said.

The young captain further explained that the decision was not easy, but part of a long-term strategy for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2027 cycle. “It’s never easy when someone like Shami bhai has to miss out, but at the same time, we have to plan ahead,” he added.

When asked if Shami’s fitness was a factor, Gill avoided a direct answer, stating, “As for fitness and selection matters, the selectors would be in a better position to give a clear answer on that.”

Shami’s Absence Raises Big Questions

Mohammed Shami, who last played a Test during the WTC Final 2023, has since been in fine form for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, leading to widespread surprise over his continued exclusion. Despite his domestic performances, selectors have preferred a younger pace unit featuring Bumrah, Siraj, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna.

Cricket experts believe that the management’s approach signals a generational shift in India’s Test bowling setup, with Shami’s international red-ball return appearing increasingly uncertain.

India Eye WTC 2027 Qualification

The ongoing Test series against South Africa holds significant weight for India’s WTC 2027 qualification hopes. A win would help them consolidate their position in the points table early in the cycle. With Gill leading a side stacked with new-generation pacers, the series could mark the beginning of a new chapter in India’s fast-bowling evolution — possibly without one of its modern greats, Mohammed Shami.
