Mumbai: Railways is working to expand the capacity of Mumbai suburban trains, improve signalling and introduce new-generation local trains with automatic doors, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.

Vaishnaw said railway projects worth around Rs 18,000 crore are currently under way in Mumbai. He was speaking at the flagging-off ceremony of the Mumbai CSMT-Sindhudurg Sawantwadi Road Express through video conferencing from New Delhi.

The minister said the planned improvements are aimed at strengthening Mumbai’s suburban railway system and improving passenger movement.

Mumbai Suburban Trains to Get New-Generation AC Locals

According to Vaishnaw, around 3,200 local train services are currently operated in Mumbai. Increasing the number of services by approximately 10% would help improve passenger movement in the city.

The Railway Board has also directed the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to manufacture 28 AC local trains. The first of these trains is expected to enter production next year.

The new-generation local trains will feature automatic doors, a change the minister said would bring a major transformation to Mumbai’s suburban railway system.

Automatic Doors Planned for New AC Local Trains

The proposed AC locals are part of the Railways’ broader effort to modernise Mumbai’s suburban train network.

Along with introducing new trains, the Railways is undertaking systematic work to increase network capacity and improve signalling. The combination of additional services, upgraded infrastructure and new-generation rolling stock is intended to support the city’s large suburban passenger base.

Dedicated Freight Corridors to Support Maharashtra

Vaishnaw also highlighted the role of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors in Maharashtra’s industrial development.

He said the freight corridors would strengthen the movement of goods between Jawaharlal Nehru Port and other parts of the country. Improved freight connectivity is expected to support the movement of goods and strengthen the state’s industrial infrastructure.

The minister’s announcement comes alongside the ongoing railway projects in Mumbai worth around Rs 18,000 crore.

With additional local services, 28 new AC trains and infrastructure upgrades in the pipeline, the Railways is pursuing multiple measures to modernise Mumbai’s suburban railway system.
