Mumbai Train Tragedy: Railways to Install Automatic Door Closure

Published on

In the wake of a tragic accident in Thane district that claimed four lives and injured six, the Railway Ministry has announced a major safety upgrade for the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. Going forward, all existing and new local trains will be equipped with automatic door-closing systems to prevent such fatal mishaps.

The incident occurred between Diva and Kopar stations on Monday when an overcrowded local train heading towards Kasara saw multiple passengers fall from the moving train, reportedly due to backpacks brushing against each other as two packed trains passed in opposite directions. Many of the victims were hanging onto footboards, a common but dangerous sight in the city’s heavily used rail network.

Immediate Safety Measures Announced

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information and Publicity), Railway Board, confirmed the urgent decision in response to the accident:

“All local train coaches currently under production for Mumbai Suburban services will now feature automatic door closing systems. Furthermore, rakes already in service will be retrofitted with this feature through redesigning.”

He stressed that passenger safety remains the top priority for Indian Railways, adding that the ministry is taking proactive steps to prevent further casualties caused by overcrowding.

State Response and Investigation Underway

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the media, stating that an inquiry into the cause of the accident is underway. He said:

“The Railway administration is probing the matter seriously. We will ensure accountability and take all measures needed to avoid a repeat of this horrific incident.”

Mumbai’s Local Trains: A Lifeline Under Strain

Mumbai’s local train network is often referred to as the city’s lifeline, carrying over 80 lakh passengers daily. However, overcrowding, especially during peak hours, has long been a chronic challenge, frequently leading to falls, injuries, and deaths.

Though modern trains with automatic doors have been introduced on limited routes, a majority of suburban rakes still have manually operated or open doors, leaving passengers vulnerable.

Next Steps in Implementation

  • All new rakes under construction will have factory-installed door automation systems.
  • Existing rakes will undergo design modifications to include this critical safety feature.
  • A phased rollout plan will be shared soon, with priority given to high-traffic routes.

Public Reaction

The announcement has been met with mixed responses. While safety advocates have welcomed the move, some commuter groups raised concerns over potential delays caused by automatic doors during peak hours.

However, most agree that saving lives should take precedence, and that the technology, if implemented efficiently, will bring Mumbai’s railway system in line with global urban transit safety standards.
