Naba Jaubana Besha 2025: Rejuvenated Deities Grace Devotees at Puri Jagannath Temple

Published on

In a magnificent display of devotion and tradition, the sacred sibling deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra reappeared before devotees in their radiant Naba Jaubana Besha (New Youthful Attire) at the Jagannath Temple in Puri on Thursday. This marks the end of their fortnight-long recuperation at the Anasara Ghara, where the deities rested after the Snana Purnima ritual.

What is Naba Jaubana Besha?

The Naba Jaubana Besha is an important ceremonial event in the run-up to the world-famous Rath Yatra. It symbolizes the rejuvenation and youthful rebirth of the divine trinity. The ritual involves:

  • Ritualistic bath of the deities
  • Repainting their bodies (excluding the eyes)
  • Appearance before devotees in newly adorned attire representing divine youth

This ceremonial transformation is performed by the Daita servitors, who lovingly prepare the deities for public darshan.

Sacred Rituals: Netroutsav and Banaka Lagi

Before the public unveiling, two crucial rituals were conducted:

  • Banaka Lagi: A secret and sacred cosmetic ritual performed by Dutta Mahapatra servitors to enhance the deities’ features
  • Netroutsav: Symbolic “eye-opening” ceremony conducted just before darshan begins

These rituals mark the end of the deities’ 15-day isolation following Snana Purnima, when they are believed to fall ill after their ceremonial bath.

Darshan Schedule for Devotees

To manage the large influx of devotees, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) organized a scheduled darshan plan:

  • Ticketed Darshan: 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
  • General Public Darshan: 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM

Devotees thronged the temple to catch a glimpse of the divine trinity in their most youthful and resplendent form, signifying vitality, purity, and divine grace.

Rath Yatra 2025 Countdown Begins

With the Naba Jaubana Darshan completed, anticipation is high for Rath Yatra 2025, set to begin tomorrow. On this grand occasion, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra will ride their majestic chariots to the Gundicha Temple, marking the start of one of the world’s oldest and largest religious processions.

The term Naba Jaubana means “new youth”, and this annual tradition is a visual metaphor for the deities regaining their health and energy after their rest. It beautifully blends mythology, devotion, and ritual, reaffirming the cultural and spiritual heartbeat of Odisha’s sacred city, Puri.
