Nagchandreshwar Temple Opens for 24 Hours on Nag Panchami 2025: Over 10 Lakh Devotees Gather for Rare Darshan in Ujjain

Published on

On Nag Panchami 2025, spiritual energy surged in Ujjain as the Nagchandreshwar Temple—situated atop the famed Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple opened its doors for a rare, once-a-year darshan. The temple welcomed devotees from midnight of July 28–29, marking the start of 24 hours of continuous darshan for pilgrims.

The grand opening was initiated by Mahant Shri Vineet Giri Maharaj of the Mahanirvani Akhada, who performed the sacred Trikal Pujan to invoke divine blessings.

Despite monsoon showers, over 10 lakh devotees are expected to visit the Nagchandreshwar Temple throughout the day. The once-in-a-year Nagchandreshwar Temple Darshan creates a surge of faith and devotion in Ujjain, drawing pilgrims from all across India.

To manage the massive footfall, 200 senior officers, 2,500 administrative staff, 1,800 police personnel, and 560 CCTV cameras have been deployed for security and crowd control.

Rare 11th-Century Idol of Lord Nagchandreshwar

At the heart of this spiritual experience lies a rare 11th-century idol of Lord Nagchandreshwar, believed to have been brought from Nepal. The sculpture features:

  • Lord Shiva reclining on a seven-headed serpent
  • Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha beside Him
  • Nandi and a lion, symbolizing their divine vehicles

The rare and detailed depiction is one of the few of its kind in India, making the darshan even more significant.
