- Odisha plans a detailed feasibility survey for six-laning NH-55.
- The highway connects major mining, power and industrial hubs.
- Expansion aims to cut congestion, boost freight movement and improve safety.
BHUBANESWAR: The NH-55 six-laning project Odisha has taken a significant step forward with the state government deciding to conduct a comprehensive feasibility survey for upgrading the busy highway into a six-lane corridor. CuttackāSambalpur NH-55 to six lanes aimed at easing congestion, strengthening industrial logistics and improving road safety along one of the stateās most critical transport routes.
Official sources said the proposed survey will lay the foundation for a detailed project report (DPR), which will guide the scope, cost and phased execution of the highway expansion.
NH-55 Six-Laning Project Odisha to Assess Technical and Land Feasibility
According to officials, the feasibility survey will examine multiple aspects of the proposed upgrade, including technical viability, alignment alternatives, land acquisition requirements and estimated project costs. Environmental impact, utility relocation and resettlement needs will also be assessed as part of the study.
The findings will determine whether the existing highway can be widened within the current right-of-way or if additional land acquisition will be required in certain stretches. Based on the survey, a DPR will be prepared to support approvals and funding decisions.
Strategic Importance of NH-55 for Industrial and Mining Sectors
NH-55 is considered a vital artery for the stateās economy, linking coal-producing belts, thermal power plants and large industrial clusters with consumption centres and logistics hubs across Odisha. The highway carries a high volume of freight traffic, including coal, steel, cement and other bulk commodities, alongside steadily rising passenger vehicle movement.
With mining output and industrial activity increasing, traffic density on the corridor has grown sharply over the years, leading to frequent bottlenecks and delays.
Safety, Congestion and Logistics Efficiency in Focus
Officials said the six-laning proposal is designed to address persistent congestion and accident-prone stretches caused by heavy truck traffic and limited carriageway width. Expanding the highway would allow better segregation of freight and passenger vehicles, smoother traffic flow and reduced collision risks.

Improved road capacity is also expected to lower travel time and logistics costs for industries that rely heavily on road transport for raw materials and finished goods.
NH-55 Phased Execution Planned After DPR Approval
Once the feasibility survey and DPR are completed, the project will be taken up for approvals and funding. Authorities indicated that execution is likely to be phased, depending on traffic demand, financial viability and statutory clearances.
With freight volumes projected to rise further in the coming years, the NH-55 expansion is expected to play a key role in strengthening industrial supply chains, improving regional connectivity and enhancing travel conditions for daily commuters along the corridor.
