Odisha CM Announces ₹10 Lakh Life Insurance for Sanitation Workers at GARIMA Workshop
Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to uplift and safeguard sanitation workers, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced a life insurance scheme worth ₹10 lakh for key sanitation workers across the state. The announcement came during the two-day national workshop ‘GARIMA’, held at the Lok Seva Bhawan Convention Centre in Bhubaneswar.
Focus on Safety, Dignity, and Inclusion
Themed “Transforming Core Sanitation Work – Safety, Dignity & Inclusion,” the GARIMA workshop brought together sanitation workers and officials from seven states to discuss innovative practices and welfare measures.
CM Majhi highlighted multiple benefits for sanitation workers, including:
- ₹10 lakh life insurance coverage
- ₹30 lakh compensation in case of death during duty
- Mobile phones for all frontline sanitation workers
- Housing under PM Awas Yojana (Urban)
- A 15-day IEC campaign (August 15–30) to raise sanitation awareness
Odisha to Host GARIMA Annually
Chief Minister Majhi announced that Odisha will host the GARIMA workshop annually to promote continued dialogue on sanitation. He invoked the Chera Pahara ritual of Rath Yatra as a symbol of respect for sanitation workers and praised the state’s GARIMA Yojana as a model inspiring other states.
“Sanitation is not just about cleanliness, it’s about dignity and development. Our mission aligns with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Majhi said.
GARIMA Yojana’s Achievements
Launched to professionalize and protect sanitation workers, the GARIMA scheme has already:
- Benefited 10,000+ sanitation workers across 115 urban areas
- Provided safety gear, identity cards, emergency support, and skill development
- Recognized workers as skilled and highly skilled professionals

- Housing & Urban Development Minister Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra called sanitation workers the “unseen heroes” of society.
- Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja emphasized Odisha’s leadership in the sanitation sector.
- Union Social Justice Secretary Amit Yadav reiterated the Centre’s support and called sanitation work “a shared moral responsibility.”
- Urban Management Centre Founder Manvita Baradi praised Odisha’s model for empowering workers beyond basic skill-building.
The workshop concluded with an exhibition of modern sanitation tools, felicitation of exemplary sanitation workers, and a vote of thanks from Additional Secretary Durgesh Nandini Sahoo.
