Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to uplift and safeguard sanitation workers, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced a life insurance scheme worth ₹10 lakh for key sanitation workers across the state. The announcement came during the two-day national workshop ‘GARIMA’, held at the Lok Seva Bhawan Convention Centre in Bhubaneswar.

Focus on Safety, Dignity, and Inclusion

Themed “Transforming Core Sanitation Work – Safety, Dignity & Inclusion,” the GARIMA workshop brought together sanitation workers and officials from seven states to discuss innovative practices and welfare measures.

CM Majhi highlighted multiple benefits for sanitation workers, including:

  • ₹10 lakh life insurance coverage
  • ₹30 lakh compensation in case of death during duty
  • Mobile phones for all frontline sanitation workers
  • Housing under PM Awas Yojana (Urban)
  • A 15-day IEC campaign (August 15–30) to raise sanitation awareness

Odisha to Host GARIMA Annually

Chief Minister Majhi announced that Odisha will host the GARIMA workshop annually to promote continued dialogue on sanitation. He invoked the Chera Pahara ritual of Rath Yatra as a symbol of respect for sanitation workers and praised the state’s GARIMA Yojana as a model inspiring other states.

“Sanitation is not just about cleanliness, it’s about dignity and development. Our mission aligns with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Majhi said.
