Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved a landmark proposal to provide free bus rides for schoolchildren across the state. The initiative will be rolled out under the Mukhyamantri Bus Seva (MBS) scheme, ensuring safe and affordable travel for lakhs of students.
Free bus rides for all students under MBS scheme
At a high-level meeting chaired by the CM on August 21, it was decided that all schoolchildren will be eligible for free travel on state buses. Students can avail the facility by showing their valid student ID card or by wearing their school uniforms.
Bus routes to be revised for wider coverage
To maximize the scheme’s reach, the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) will re-map bus routes and timings to cover the highest number of schools. The district education officers will provide key data to facilitate this process, ensuring that students across urban and rural regions benefit.
Revenue loss to be compensated by government
The commerce and transport departments will allocate funds to compensate OSRTC for any loss of revenue incurred due to free student rides. Officials stated that this step reflects the government’s strong focus on education, accessibility, and social equity.
Boost to education and accessibility
The scheme is expected to reduce travel barriers for schoolchildren, particularly in rural and economically weaker sections. It also supports the state government’s broader vision of empowering students by making education more accessible and reducing financial burdens on families.
