Bhubaneswar: Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania on Sunday confirmed that a high-level investigation is currently underway into the shocking case of a minor girl being set ablaze by three unidentified assailants in Balanga, Puri district.

Forensic Teams Examine Crime Scene

Addressing the media from the crime scene, DGP Khurania said that law enforcement acted promptly upon receiving the report. “As soon as the incident was reported, police teams rushed to the spot. Today, specialised forensic teams from the State Forensic Science Laboratory and AIIMS Bhubaneswar conducted a detailed on-site examination and collected crucial physical evidence,” he stated.

Investigation at a “Sensitive Stage”

DGP Khurania added that some leads have already been identified and are being thoroughly pursued. “The case is at a very sensitive stage, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is delivered swiftly and transparently. Confirmed findings will be made public in due course,” he assured.

Incident Timeline and Victim’s Medical Status

The horrific incident occurred on the morning of July 19, when the teenage girl was allegedly set on fire by three attackers. Despite suffering 75% burn injuries, she managed to seek shelter in a nearby home. Locals immediately took her to the Pipili Community Health Centre, after which she was transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, and later airlifted to AIIMS Delhi for advanced treatment.

Government Assures Support and Swift Justice

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep concern over the incident and assured full medical and financial support to the victim and her family. The Chief Minister also offered prayers at the Shrine of Lord Jagannath for the girl’s recovery.

SIT Formed for Fast-Track Investigation

In a decisive move, the Odisha Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to handle the case. The SIT has been instructed to fast-track the investigation and identify the culprits without delay. K9 units and scientific experts have thoroughly combed the crime scene, and senior officers are actively supervising the progress of the investigation.

The Balanga case has triggered widespread outrage across Odisha, prompting demands for urgent action and justice.
