Odisha on High Alert as Cyclonic Storm Approaches Bay of Bengal

Published on

Odisha High Alert Cyclone: The Odisha government has placed all district administrations and state departments on high alert in anticipation of a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal by Monday. State Minister Suresh Pujari, speaking from Bhubaneswar, confirmed that adequate relief materials have been arranged and all district collectors are closely monitoring the situation.

Cyclonic Storm Likely Over Bay of Bengal

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to move west-north-westwards and intensify into a depression over the southeast and central Bay of Bengal by today. The system is forecast to strengthen into a deep depression on October 26 and further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday.

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha for at least three days starting Monday. Coastal and southern districts are expected to experience wind speeds of 40-60 kmph. Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea from October 26 onwards due to rough sea conditions.

Heavy Rainfall Across Southern States

The developing system is also likely to bring moderate to heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Puducherry, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh as it progresses. Isolated areas in Coastal Andhra Pradesh could see extremely heavy rains on October 27 and 28. Heavy showers have already impacted multiple districts in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, causing waterlogging in places like Sivaganga district. Disaster management teams have been deployed across northern and central regions of Tamil Nadu.

Rainfall Expected in Other States

Rainfall activity is expected to continue into early next week across Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and Puducherry. Other states including Gujarat, Jharkhand, Odisha, and parts of West Bengal are also likely to experience rain as the weather system moves west-northwest. Fishermen across southern coastal belts have been directed to remain ashore until conditions improve.

Odisha Authorities on Preparedness

Odisha officials are closely monitoring the developing cyclonic storm. Relief materials have been pre-positioned, and disaster management teams are on standby. Coastal communities are being warned to remain alert as heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to affect life and property in vulnerable areas.
