  • Enforcement will focus on highways, accident prone zones and major intersections.

Cuttack: The Odisha road safety special drive will be conducted by the state Transport Department from March 21 to March 31 to reduce road accidents and fatalities. The campaign has been launched following instructions from Bibhuti Bhushan Jena.

The directive was issued through the State Transport Authority Odisha to all Regional Transport Officers and Additional Regional Transport Officers across the state.

Authorities say the initiative aims to strengthen compliance with traffic rules while also spreading awareness among road users.

Odisha Road Safety Special Drive to Target Major Traffic Violations

According to the Transport Department, analysis of accident data shows that many road accidents are caused by violations such as:

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Riding without helmets
  • Driving in the wrong direction
  • Overloading vehicles

The data suggests that stronger enforcement combined with awareness campaigns could help reduce road accident risks.

Officials say the campaign will be conducted across accident prone areas, national and state highways, mining zones, industrial corridors, city roads and major intersections.

Strict Enforcement Against Traffic Rule Violations

During the drive, authorities will carry out strict checks against several violations including:

  • Driving without a valid driving licence
  • Drunk driving
  • Carrying more than two riders on two wheelers
  • Transporting passengers in goods vehicles
  • Driving by minors
  • Overloading vehicles

Special attention will also be given to heavy vehicles used in mining and construction sectors such as tippers, dumpers and hyva trucks.

What the enforcement strategy indicates is a focus on sectors and areas where accident risks are highest.

Awareness Campaigns to Promote Safe Driving

Alongside enforcement, the government will run awareness programmes to promote responsible driving.

These initiatives will include:

  • Helmet and seatbelt awareness campaigns
  • Road safety advisory sessions for drivers
  • Discussions with transport unions and vehicle owners
  • Awareness programmes in schools and colleges

The department will also organise blood donation camps, eye testing camps and public outreach programmes to encourage safer road behaviour.

Information campaigns will be conducted through banners, leaflets, public announcements and social media.

‘Come Home Safe’ Message Emphasised

The campaign will highlight the road safety message promoted by Mohan Charan Majhi, urging citizens to drive responsibly under the slogan “Come Home Safe.”

Authorities have appealed to all road users to strictly follow traffic rules and cooperate with enforcement agencies.

The data suggests that improving compliance with traffic regulations remains one of the most effective ways to reduce road accident deaths in the state.
