Odisha Weather Forecast: IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday reported that the monsoon trough currently extends from Nalia through Vallabh Vidyanagar, Betul, Mandla, Sambalpur, and Chandbali, before stretching east-southeastwards to the east-central Bay of Bengal. The system is active up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

According to the forecast, several parts of Odisha are likely to experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next two days. The IMD has also issued yellow warnings alerting people to remain cautious about possible heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

Odisha Weather Forecast for August 21, 2025

For Day 1 (valid up to 8:30 AM on August 21, 2025), light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are expected at many places across the state.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

For Day 2 (valid from 8:30 AM on August 21 to 8:30 AM on August 22, 2025), light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers are also likely at many places across Odisha.

Yellow Warning:

  1. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are very likely at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balasore, and Bargarh districts.
  2. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of similar intensity may occur in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Puri districts.

IMD Advisory for the Public

The IMD has urged residents to stay alert, avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and take precautions against lightning strikes and strong surface winds. Farmers and fishermen have also been advised to plan their activities carefully in view of the changing weather conditions.
