Pahandi of Lord Balabhadra Underway in Puri as Grand Rath Yatra 2025 Rituals Begin

Published on

The sacred city of Puri is alive with divine fervour and jubilant celebrations as the world-renowned Rath Yatra festival kicks off. Devotees from across the globe are witnessing the majestic Pahandi Bije procession of Lord Balabhadra, marking the beginning of the annual chariot festival.

Sacred Ritual Schedule Unfolds

The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has meticulously planned the series of rituals for the day. The Pahandi procession, where the deities are ceremoniously brought to their chariots, is scheduled to conclude at 12:30 pm.

This will be followed by the seating of deities Sri Madanmohan, Sri Ram, and Sri Krushna in their respective chariots from 12:30 pm to 1 pm.

From 1:30 pm to 2 pm, the sacred Chitalagi ceremony will be performed, which signifies the adorning of ornaments. Simultaneously, the Besha Sesa ritual — the final touch-up of the deities’ attire — will be held until 2:30 pm.

Royal Cleaning & Ceremonial Preparations

The traditional Chhera Pahanra ritual, in which the Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the chariot platforms with a golden broom, will take place from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm — a symbolic act of humility and devotion.

At 4 pm, the Charamalaphita ritual will be conducted, followed by the installation of the Ghoda (horses) and Sarathi (charioteers) on each chariot.

Grand Chariot Pulling to Begin at 4 PM

The highlight of the day — the pulling of the three giant chariots (Taladhwaja, Darpadalana, and Nandighosha) — will begin at 4 pm, as lakhs of devotees prepare to haul the sacred vehicles along the Bada Danda (Grand Road) towards the Gundicha Temple.
