Pakistan Suicide Bombing Kills 16 Soldiers in North Waziristan
Islamabad: A devastating suicide bombing rocked North Waziristan in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, killing at least 16 soldiers and injuring 29 others, including civilians and children. The attack was confirmed by local government and police officials, according to an AFP report.
Suicide Bomber Targets Military Convoy
The attack occurred when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy in the troubled northwestern district. Initially, 13 soldiers were reported dead, but the toll was later updated to 16, a police officer in the area said.
- 10 soldiers and 19 civilians were reported injured in the blast.
- The explosion also caused the collapse of nearby houses, injuring six children.
Officials added that four soldiers remain in critical condition. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, a faction of the Pakistan Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mortar Shell Explosion Injures 14, Including 5 Children
In a separate incident on Saturday, a mortar shell struck a house in Kachhi Kamar village in Kurram district, also in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border. At least 14 people, including five children aged between 5 and 11, were injured.
The explosion partially damaged the house, and injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the mortar shell, which was reportedly fired from an undisclosed location.
Escalating Violence in Pakistan’s Border Regions
Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in cross-border attacks and internal insurgencies, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. Islamabad accuses Afghan-based militants of carrying out attacks using Afghan territory — a charge denied by the Taliban.
According to an AFP tally, around 290 people, mostly security personnel, have died in militant attacks in Pakistan this year alone.
In related developments, U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga on Friday warned that Afghanistan is again becoming a safe haven for terrorist groups, posing a rising threat to South and Central Asia and global security, according to Khaama Press.
