Bhubaneswar: The Odisha heatwave warning IMD has raised concerns as extreme heat and humidity continue to grip the state. Weather officials have warned that the situation may worsen over the next few days, with temperatures expected to rise significantly during the peak summer period.

The alert comes as several regions are already experiencing intense heat, affecting daily life across both coastal and interior districts.

A yellow warning has been issued for 11 districts including:

  • Ganjam
  • Gajapati
  • Nayagarh
  • Khordha
  • Jagatsinghpur
  • Kendrapara
  • Puri
  • Cuttack

In addition, districts like Balangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur are expected to face hot and humid conditions.

The coastal belt is likely to be the worst affected, with above-normal heatwave days forecast throughout April.

Temperature Rise Expected After Pana Sankranti

The IMD has predicted that temperatures may rise by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius starting from Pana Sankranti, which marks the beginning of the Baisakha (summer) season in the Odia calendar.

This increase could push temperatures beyond 40°C in several districts, intensifying heatwave conditions across the state.

Already, nine cities in Odisha have recorded temperatures touching 40°C, indicating the severity of the ongoing heat spell.

Why Odisha Is Facing Severe Heatwave Conditions

Experts attribute the rising temperatures to seasonal weather patterns combined with high humidity, especially in coastal regions.
