Parliament Approves Extension of President’s Rule in Manipur Till February 2026

Published on

New Delhi: The Parliament has officially approved the extension of President’s Rule in Manipur for another six months, starting from 13th August 2025. The Rajya Sabha passed the statutory resolution today through a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had already given its consent to the extension last week.

The resolution was moved by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, who stated that the extension was necessary to maintain stability and law and order in the state. President’s Rule was first imposed in Manipur on 13th February 2025 due to the prevailing unrest.

Manipur President’s Rule Extension

While responding to the discussion, Nityanand Rai noted that since the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, there has been a significant reduction in violence. He informed the House that only one violent incident occurred in which one person died, and no deaths have been reported in the past four months. He attributed the improved situation to the governance efforts led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under whose leadership various development initiatives are being implemented in the North-Eastern state.

However, the resolution was not without criticism. During the debate, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Muzibulla Khan strongly opposed the move, arguing that extending President’s Rule in the state was inappropriate at this time.
