Kendrapara: The Pattamundai Excise torture case has triggered disciplinary action within the Odisha Excise Department after allegations emerged that a local youth was illegally detained and physically assaulted by excise personnel in Kendrapara district.
Following an inquiry into the allegations, the Excise Commissioner ordered the suspension of two officials pending further investigation.
Two Officers Suspended
The suspended officers have been identified as:
- SI Chhayakanta Nayak
- ASI Pradeep Mallik
The action comes amid allegations that the officials were involved in the detention and assault of a youth during an excise operation.
Authorities have indicated that the suspension is a precautionary administrative measure while the investigation continues.
How the Incident Allegedly Unfolded
According to reports, local resident Binod had informed excise authorities about an alleged illegal liquor trade operating in Baradia village under the Rajnagar area.
Based on the information, excise officials conducted a raid in the village.
During the operation, Binod reportedly recorded the proceedings on his mobile phone. It is alleged that some officials objected to the recording and subsequently detained him.
The youth later claimed that he was physically assaulted while in custody.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the incident, Binod lodged a complaint at Rajnagar Police Station against six individuals, including the suspended Sub-Inspector.
Based on the complaint, police have initiated an investigation to verify the allegations and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators are expected to examine witness statements, available evidence and departmental records as part of the probe.
Why Pattamundai Excise Torture Case Matters
The allegations have raised concerns regarding the conduct of enforcement personnel and the treatment of individuals involved in official operations.
The second-order impact of such incidents extends beyond the immediate case, as public trust in law enforcement and regulatory agencies often depends on transparency, accountability and adherence to legal procedures.
The suspension of the officers signals that authorities are treating the allegations seriously while allowing the investigation to proceed independently.
Awaiting Investigation Findings
At present, the allegations remain under investigation, and authorities have not released final conclusions regarding the incident.
Officials have stated that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
The case continues to draw attention locally, with many awaiting the outcome of the police investigation and any further departmental action by the Excise Department.
