Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday honoured India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 136th birth anniversary, observed across the country as Children’s Day.

Sharing his message on X, PM Modi wrote that he paid heartfelt respects to the former Prime Minister. Nehru, fondly remembered as Chacha Nehru, played a defining role in India’s freedom struggle and later shaped the newly independent nation with his focus on democratic values, secularism, education and scientific progress.

National Leaders Recall Nehru’s Legacy

Senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also marked the occasion. Kharge said Nehru’s vision continues to guide India, describing his legacy as a symbol of freedom, democracy and scientific thinking.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi shared that Nehru laid the foundation of independent India’s democratic and constitutional framework through bold and forward-looking leadership. He added that Nehru’s principles continue to inspire millions.

Priyanka Gandhi and other Congress members echoed similar sentiments, stressing that Nehru’s belief in equality, education, children’s welfare and national unity remains relevant for today’s India.

Nehru’s Enduring Influence on Modern India

Nehru’s contributions to nation-building, including the promotion of scientific institutions, expansion of educational opportunities and strengthening of democratic institutions, continue to hold significance. His birthday, celebrated as Children’s Day, honours his love and commitment toward the welfare of children across India.
